In Japan, the beauty technique is mainly known as “artmake”, while in Western countries it’s called “permanent makeup” or “micropigmentation.”
In Korea, it’s referred to as “반영구 (semi-permanent)” or “눈썹 문신 (eyebrow tattoo).”
As these differences show, the terminology and development of artmake vary by country depending on local beauty needs and preferences — and as trends evolve, so does the artmake industry itself.
This time, let’s take a closer look at how artmake and eyebrow trends have changed in Korea over the years.

Thin, arched eyebrows were the trend of the time.
In those days, people believed that the deeper and longer-lasting the pigment, the better. As a result, little attention was paid to the safety of pigments or the depth of implantation into the skin.
That’s why many older women today still have grayish or overly thin eyebrow residues — they are the result of these outdated practices.

During this period, artmake techniques began evolving into what we now recognize as modern styles.
Safer pigments specifically formulated for semi-permanent began to be used, and designs shifted toward a more natural look.
Whereas older techniques filled in the entire brow area, hair-stroke methods started to appear during this era.

In both Japan and Korea, straight “flat” brows became a massive trend — giving a softer, more youthful appearance.
Many clients requested these thick, straight brows, and semi-permanent artists followed suit with designs that emphasized this shape.

From a few years ago, the focus shifted toward more natural and subtle semi-permanent results.Techniques such as soft gradient shading gained popularity, adding dimension and a gentle shadow effect.
Designs also diversified — instead of only straight brows, arched and semi-arched shapes became more common, tailored to each client’s facial structure.
Today, procedures emphasize skin safety and hygiene.
The depth of pigmentation is carefully controlled to minimize damage, and education now stresses proper sanitation and technique.
As a result, pigments naturally fade within 1–3 years, allowing for retouching or redesigning without leftover residue.
Looking back, it’s clear that while techniques have advanced significantly, the quality of the artist’s skill remains the key factor.
Without sufficient training, poor technique can still result in permanent tattoo-like residue that doesn’t fade over time.
In such cases, clients may not be able to receive new treatments due to skin limitations.
Therefore, both artists and clients must approach semi-permanent with care — artists need solid knowledge and precise technique, while clients should carefully choose qualified practitioners they can trust.
